Judy Dorchester (Formerly)

"Oreyn Fox becomes Headmaster of Hogwarts."
— The Daily Prophet, 2024

The Hogwarts Board of Governors are a governing body of witch and wizards, responsible for overseeing Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Typically a group of twelve, they can appoint and also suspend Headmasters, as well as intervene on serious matters that they feel the castle is not handling well itself, as an example, in 1993, when the Hippogriff known as Buckbeak attacked a student. In rare cases, they may also shut down the castle entirely.

In 2022, as Chairman of the Board of Governors, Chief Warlock Judy Dorchester was not only able to position Vice-Chancellor Zimelda Zemeckis as Potions mistress and observer at the castle, but was then later, in 2023, free to take the position of Headmistress herself. It seems, then, that the Board of Governors cannot expressly overstep the reigning Headmaster of Hogwarts, and that it takes time and the complete approval of the whole board, an accomplishment not easily achieved without blackmail or some form of persuasion.

It can be considered that a variety of witch and wizards may make up the board of governors, while still holding positions in other departments, or just hold it as a singular job on its own.

Behind the Scenes

  • The Hogwarts Board of Governors can be found in the virtual world Second Life® @ Mischief Managed, a devotional sim created by Anya Ohmai and voluntarily maintained by various creative Administrators and players. You can find out more information here:
  • Judy Dorchester is the only fully roleplayed character to have chaired the Board of Governors.
  • When the Triwizard Tournament took place at Mischief Managed in 2020-2021, the governor Polianthes Winters temporarily filled the role of Deputy Headmistress until a suitable witch or wizard was chosen. She later temporarily filled the role of Professor of Ancient Runes.
  • Whenever the Ministry of Magic visits Hogwarts, the witches and wizards attending are usually governors.
  • It is not currently possible to roleplay a Hogwarts governor at Mischief Managed, and all twelve positions are filled, either by Roleplay Department characters or NPC's.
